The Defence and Protection Industry
The Sector
Total UK Central and Local Government expenditure on defence in 2009 is £42.1 billion, with an additional £33.6 billion
spent on protection, ie police, fire, prisons and public order services.
This UK defence and security industry employs about 300,000 people in 9,000 companies and generates sales of £35 billion per
year, including £5 billion in exports. In addition the private protection industry is worth in excess of £6 billion
and employs over 100,000 people.
Crime, national security and the threat of terrorism, whether perceived or real, affect all aspects of life in the UK and abroad.
The Home Office’s counter-terrorism strategy (CONTEST) reflects intelligence opinion that the biggest threat to the
UK comes from al–Qaeda–linked groups, and takes into account recent attacks on hotels. In addressing the threat from
terrorism, 60,000 people are being trained to respond to a terrorist threat, in everywhere from shopping centres to hotels.
